Parramatta

The Narrow Road to the Deep North

Parramatta is the setting of the collision that ends Dorrigo Evans’s life, turning an otherwise unexplained late-night journey into the final scene of his story. The account links the place to both public uncertainty about the celebrated war hero and the private dreams that occupy his last three days.

The Collision

At three in the morning, Dorrigo Evans is driving through an intersection in Parramatta when a stolen Subaru Impreza, carrying young people fleeing the police, runs a red light and strikes his ageing Bentley. Two of the Subaru’s occupants are killed, another is critically injured, and Dorrigo is critically injured in the crash. He dies three days later.

Public Uncertainty and Narrative Significance

The circumstances of Dorrigo’s presence at the intersection are never publicly explained, nor is the matter of an alcohol reading. The account sets this silence against the nation’s preparations to mourn him as a war hero and its debate over youth and criminality. In his final days, his extraordinary dreams return to Amy and to the war, so Parramatta marks not only the end of his life but the point from which the narrative moves between public commemoration and his inward, unsettled past.
